ABSTRACT
The founder of Homoeopathy, Master Hahnemann boldly took the first step. It is emphasized in 6th edition
that the dry dose is the weakest dose. For those who wish to give the “One dose high” try putting high potency
into liquid solution and succussions 8-10 more times before the next dose. This follows main principles of the
6th edition of Organon of Medicine.
Key Words: Water Potency, LM Potency, 50-Millesimal Potency, Homoeopathy
INTRODUCTION
Application of the principles found in 6th edition of Organon of Medicine is used in acute as well as chronic
cases. It is encouraging to observe experienced homoeopaths learning new concept in homoeopathy that has
been around since 1842. (1)
A Homoeopath should be learned in all aspect of administering a remedy and be willing to explore further into
the areas where Hahnemann boldly took the first step. It is emphasized in 6th edition that the dry dose is the
weakest dose. The remedy works as dry dose (either single dose or respected) does it works better in a water
solution?
For those who wish to give the “One dose high” try putting high potency into liquid solution and succussions
8-10 more times before the next dose. This follows main principles of the 6th edition of Organon of Medicine,
though the one dose high does not follow the criteria for daily repetition of the dose. The LM potency itself is
yet another dilution utilising these principle. In §247 footnote 1, Hahnemann mentioned why does the remedy
have to be in water. The dose should neither be repeated dry, nor wet, without change of potency.
Posology
The term ‘Posology’ originates from the Greek, Posos meaning how much and Logos meaning study or
discourse. Posology is the study of Law of dosage. Dose is defined as the least quantity of substance required
to affect a change in nature. Homoeopathic ‘dose’ includes potency, quantity, form and number of
administration of the medicine.(2)
50- Millesimal Potency:
“The spiritual power of medicine achieves its object not by quantity but by quality”- S. Hahnemann [spirit of
new theory of healing, 1813] (3)
“The suitability of a medicine of any given case of disease does not depend on its accurate homoeopathic
selection alone, but on the proper size, or rather smallness of dose”-S. Hahnemann [Organon sixth edition, §
275] (4)

Dr Hahnemann always tried hard to satisfy his ambition of attaining the cure in a rapid, gentle and permanent
manner. At last, he reached the goal through the introduction of fifty millesimal scale of potency in the sixth
edition of Organon, the most perfect of all editions. (4, 5)
Dr. Hahnemann often communicated his new techniques privately with some of his most respected students
before he made them public. One year before the publication of the 1837 edition of the Chronic Diseases,
Hahnemann wrote a letter to Constantine Hering, in which he gave detailed instructions of the latest techniques
relating to the medicinal solutions. He gave the following advice to his lifelong friend:
(This is recorded in Bradford’s Life and Letters of Hahnemann) :( 3)
“I have made some improvements in the techniques of our art, which I will now first communicate to you….
Now, as my medicines are very powerful, I seldom dissolve more than one globule in 7, 15, 20, 30,
tablespoons of water, and, because the patient has no distilled water (which besides, after a few days becomes
spoilt and ferments), I employ for this purpose spring or river water mixed with 1-15th or 1-20th parts of
spirits of wine or I put three or four small pieces of hard wood charcoal into the solution. This mixture, of
which the patient affected with a chronic malady) takes a tablespoon or 1, 2 or 3 teaspoons every day, or every
other day, is to be shaken in the bottle five or six times every dose taken, in order to change the degree of
Dynamization each time.”
In the following year of 1837, Dr. Hahnemann wrote in that edition of the
Chronic Diseases :( 6)
“Experience has shown me, as it has no doubt also shown to the most ofmy followers that it is most useful in
diseases of any magnitude (notexcepting even the most acute and still more so in the half- acute, in thetedious
and most tedious) to give to the patient the powerful homoeopathicpellet or pellets in solution only, and this
solution in divided doses. In thisway we give the medicine, dissolved in seven to twenty tablespoons of water
without any addition, in acute and very acute diseases every hour orevery half hour, a tablespoon at a time,
with weak persons or children, onlya small part of a tablespoon (one or two teaspoons or coffee spoonful)
maybe given as a dose. In chronic diseases I have found it best to give a doseof a solution of the suitable
remedy every two days, more usually every day.” With this, we can conclude how our master supported the
use of medicinal dilutions and higher potencies and their repetition.
Dr. Schmidt published a small booklet in 1954, Hidden treasures of the 6th Edition of the Organon and stated
:( 7)
“The main points which I wish to raise here are entirely new and somewhat revolutionary when compared with
accepted notions divulged and applied in the five earlier editions of the Organon. They are barely known or not
known at all by homoeopaths.”
Only in his very comprehensive Hahnemannbiography the latter remarks:
“Hahnemann called remedy potencies that were produced in this new way Médicaments au globule as opposed
to the Médicaments à la goutte which were produced using an earlier system and whose potency grades he
used to express in Roman numerals. For the new remedy preparations on globules, he used Arabic numerals
with a little ring above (1, 2, 3, 5 etc.)”.
Haehl also mentions that according to Hahnemann’s then still existing medicine chest these remedies were
produced in ten different potencies. Which potentization Hahnemann preferred, when and in which cases he
resorted to the controversial Q potencies and how often he actually used them Haehl was unable to disclose.
His premature death prevented him from publishing
Hahnemann’s case journals, which had not been published before. (4, 5)

These are the reasons why LM potency and 6th edition of the Organon are not used much by many
homoeopaths worldwide. (8)
Dr. Hahnemann’s new but perfected method:
In the footnote 132 to § 246, Dr. Hahnemann has said that :( 4)
“What I said in the 5th edition of the Organon, in a long note to this paragraph in order to prevent these
undesirable reactions of the vital energy, was all that the experience I then had justified. But during the last
four or five years, however, all these difficulties are wholly solved by my new altered but perfected method.
The same carefully selected medicine may now be given daily and for months, if necessary, in this way,
namely, after the lower degree of potency has been used for one or two weeks in the treatment of chronic
disease, advance is made in the same way to higher degrees, (beginning according to new Dynamization
method, taught herewith the use of lowest degrees).”
How they are denoted: (9)
The 50- millesimal potencies are denoted by ‘0’ prefixed as follows:
0/1, 0/2, 0/3, 0/4, 0/6, 0/12, etc.
The numerator ‘0’ represents symbolically the poppy sized globule, employed in each Dynamization as
distinct from the drop of the medicine utilized in the Centesimal and Decimal scale.
They are at times denoted as LM1, LM2, LM3, OR LM I, LM II, LM III, or 0/I, O/II, O/III, etc. Dr.
Hahnemann used to write 0/1, 0/2, 0/3.
Preparation of the 50- millesimal scale of potencies (6, 9, 10, 12):
The process of preparation of these potencies is only found in footnote 150 to § 270 of the 6th edition of the
Organon of Medicine: (4)
One gram of the substance to be dynamited (one drop of quick silver, petroleum, etc.) is taken to one third of
the hundred grains of sugar of milk (1 grain = 0.063 grams) is added to and put in glazed porcelain mortar, the
bottom dulled previously by rubbing it with fine, moist sand.
Here, the care should be taken that the sugar of milk used for the process must be of that special pure quality
that is crystallized on strings and comes to us in shape of long bars.
After adding the substance to sugar of milk first it is mixed with a porcelain spatula and triturated rather
strongly, for 6-7 minutes, with the pestle rubbed dull, then the mass is scraped from the bottom of the mortar
and the pestle for 3-4 minutes, in order to make it homogenous. This is followed by triturating in the same way
for 6-7 minutes without adding anything more and again scraping for 3-4 minutes what has adhered to the
mortar and the pestle. The second third of the sugar of milk is now added, mixed with the spatula and again
triturated 6-7 minutes, followed by the scraping for the 3-4 minutes and trituration without further addition for
6-7 minutes.
The last third of the sugar of milk is then added, mixed with the spatula and triturated as before 6-7 minutes
with most careful scraping together. The powder thus prepared is put in a vial, well corked, and protected from
sunlight. The name of the substance and the designation thus marked as 1/1000.
In order to raise this product to 1/10,000, one grain of this powder i.e., 1/100 is mixed with the third part of
100 grains of powdered sugar of milk and then proceeded as before, but every third must be carefully triturated
twice thoroughly for each time for 6-7 minutes and scraped together for 3-4 minutes before the second and last
third of sugar of milk is added. After each third the same procedure is taken. When everything is finished, the
powder is put in a well corked vial and labelled 1/10,000.

If now one grain of this powder is taken in the same way, the 1/ 1,000,000 the original substance.
Accordingly, such a trituration of the three degrees requires six times 6-7 minutes for triturating and six times
3-4 minutes of scraping, thus one hour for every degree. After one hour of such trituration of the first degree,
each grain will contain 1/1000; of the second 1/10,000; and in the third 1/1,000,000 of the drug used.
These are three degrees of the dry powder trituration, which if carried out correctly, will affect a good
beginning for the dynamization of the medicinal substance. Mortal, pestle and spatula must be cleaned before
using for another medicinal substance (13).
Now one grain of one millionth part of drug in powder is dissolved in 500 drops of mixture of which one part
is alcohol and four parts of distilled water, of this one drop is put in a vial and to this one drop is added to 100
drops of pure alcohol and 100 strong succussions with hand against hard but elastic body is given. This is the
medicine in first degree of dynamization.
Now small sugar globules are taken which are prepared under supervision by the confectioner from starch and
sugar. These small globules are freed from the fine dust parts by passing them through a sieve.
Then these globules are put through a strainer that will permit only 100 to pass through one grain. These small
sugar globules are moistened with the first degree dynamization in a small cylindrical vessel shaped like a
thimble, made of glass, porcelain or silver, with a small opening at the bottom in which the globules are put
and medicated. They are moistened with first degree dynamization, stirred and poured out on blotting paper, in
order to dry them quickly and kept in well corked vial with the sign of (I) i.e., 0/1 degree of potency.
One globule of this 0/1 potency is taken for further dynamization, and put into a second new vial with one drop
of water to dissolve it and then to this is added 100 drops of alcohol and 100 strong succussions are given.
With this alcoholic medicinal fluid, globules are again moistened, spread upon blotting paper and dried
quickly, and then put into a well corked vial, protected from heat and sunlight and labelled as (II) i.e., 0/2. In
this way, the process is continued until the twenty- ninth is reached.
Then with the 100 drops of alcohol by means of 100 succussions, an alcoholic medicinal fluid is formed with
which the thirtieth dynamization degree is given to properly moistened and dried sugar globules.
Evolution of Homoeopathic Posology
Before the discovery of Homoeopathic system, during his earlier period, Hahnemann was using massive doses,
as was the practice in those days. But by his keen observation he was able to detect that large doses of
medicine were causing undue aggravation. He says that he was forced to use such large quantities of medicine,
as some circumstances of the patient must have interrupted with the action of medicines. Here we can see that
Hahnemann inferred that the large quantities of medicine was not the factor which helped in curing disease,
but sufficient quantity just needed to excite an reaction was only needed.
In § 281 foot note he says that he has made some changes in the procedure of carrying out successions.
Hahnemann says “…And moreover, the homoeopathic medicines becomes potentized at very division and
diminution by trituration and succession – a development of the inherent powers of medicinal substances
which was never dreamed of before my time, and which is of so powerful a character that of late years I have
been compelled by convincing experience to reduce the 10 successions formerly directed to two.
Advantages of LM potency: (10, 12)
• Aggravations are minimised and can be regulated more easily (§ 245 & 246).
• There is no leap or jump in this method. The patient starts with LM 1 and goes up to LM 1, LM3, and so
forth after finishing each bottle.

• Each dose of LM is modified by means of succussions and helps in rapid cure and easily accepted by the vital
principle.
• If there is any aggravation with LM potencies, it will disappear within few days or hours when the remedy is
stopped, usually much faster, though in over sensitive patients, the aggravation may last much longer.
• LM can also be used in acute diseases where high potency centesimal have not helped.
• Deep acting remedies like Lyco. And Calc. can be used daily and repeated for months.
• Long standing chronic maladies can be cured more quickly with this scale of potency.
• In mental illness, where a low centesimal aggravates, LM can cure smoothly.
• In cases of long-time suppression, LM can revive suppressed symptoms more smoothly.
• In cases of advanced pathology LM can not only palliate but sometimes can cure the disease.
• No severe reactions even after prescribing the highest potency frequently.
• According to Dr. R. P. Patel, 0/30 being the highest and 0/3 being the lowest, it becomes very easy to select
from the limited range of potencies.
• The liquid doses of LM touches more nerves compared to dry doses, so helps in rapid cure, ascertain the
means of rapid, gentle and permanent cure, as should be the aim of every homoeopath.
