Do Women Negotiators Obtain More Equitable Results?

Abstract: This paper addresses gender balance in international negotiations and how women negotiators get equitable outcomes. The paper employs qualitative data analysis of existing literature on international negotiation and women’s role in reaching equitable outcomes. The findings show that women negotiators in top positions have produced equitable outcomes compared to their male counterparts, albeit some have failed to obtain equitable outcomes at the international level. The paper discusses factors that impact successful negotiation by women. It concludes by recommending practical ways to help reverse the trend of women’s failure to obtain equitable outcomes during negotiation.

I. INTRODUCTION

There is the perception that women are the weaker vessel, fragile, and less competent. That perception is stereotype thinking, and such thinking can significantly affect the negotiated outcome by a woman. People perceive negotiation as “a male sort of thing,” considering its independent and assertive form and the perception that women are passive. The good news is that though such perceptions can be fatal, they are not real.
Throughout this paper, the researcher discusses the background of gender balance in international negotiation and refers to women in negotiation and their impact on obtaining equitable outcomes. The researcher believes that women can negotiate better and, more so, obtain more equitable outcomes if given the opportunity and have a good representation. Whatever the outcome, one cannot debunk that women have played vital roles in achieving positive negotiation outcomes.
