Contextual Determinants Of Entrepreneurship Development In Imo State, Nigeria: An Empirical Analysis

Entrepreneurship serves as a vital instrument for economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction, particularly in developing economies like Nigeria. This study investigated the factors influencing entrepreneurship development in Imo State, Nigeria. Despite various entrepreneurship programs and policies, the state continues to experience high business failure rates and limited scalability. The study adopted a descriptive quantitative survey design, and data were collected from 200 respondents, including entrepreneurs, students, lecturers, and officials of entrepreneurship agencies. A structured questionnaire measured six constructs—entrepreneurship education, institutional support, infrastructure and finance, cultural and social capital, training and incubation, and policy framework. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression techniques. Findings revealed that all the studied factors significantly influence entrepreneurship development (R² = 0.72, p < 0.05). Infrastructure and financial access exerted the strongest influence, followed by education and institutional support. Cultural and social capital, as well as training and incubation programs, also showed positive effects. The study concludes that entrepreneurial growth in Imo State is determined by a combination of educational, financial, infrastructural, and policy-related factors. It recommends strengthening entrepreneurship education, improving access to finance, developing infrastructure, and enhancing policy implementation to promote sustainable entrepreneurial development
