Self-Reported Emotional Intelligence on the Competencies of Nurse Managers in a Level 2 Government Hospital

Nurse manager competencies are vital because they directly bridge the gap between corporate administrative strategy and frontline clinical execution to ensure operational efficiency. There is a scarcity pf research studies at the local level where competencies of nurse managers is influenced by self-reported emotional intelligence in a level 2 hospital. This quantitative study utilized the descriptive correlational design to assess the relationship of self-reported emotional intelligence and competencies among nurse managers in a level 2 government hospital in Mandaue City for the first half of August 2026. Findings of the study revealed that self-reported emotional intelligence of the nurse managers was average. Specifically, they had an average appraisal of emotions (perceiving emotions), managing self-relevant emotions, managing others' emotions (social skills), and utilization of emotions. The competencies of the nurse mangers were high. Specifically, they had a high level of staff advocacy and development, team communication and collaboration, change and resource management, quality monitoring and pursuance, and personal mastery. Self-reported emotional intelligence was significantly correlated with competencies of the nurse managers. As a result, a competency enhancement plan for nurse managers was proposed.
