Effects of Public Health Education Intervention on Knowledge of Cholera on Inhabitants of Some Selected Communities in Delta State, Nigeria

Abstract

Cholera remains a persistent public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in Delta State, where recurrent outbreaks continue to threaten vulnerable populations. This study examined the effects of public health education intervention on knowledge of cholera on inhabitants of some selected communities in Delta State, Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study while four null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. A quasi experimental design was employed, involving pre- and post-tests among selected community residents. The intervention consisted of culturally appropriate, participatory health education sessions focusing on cholera causes, transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures. Findings revealed significant improvements in knowledge following the intervention, with the mean knowledge score of the intervention group increasing by 10.07 points, compared to 1.31 in the control group. All age categories, both genders, and all education levels demonstrated knowledge gains, with participants aged 40+ and those with lower education levels showing slightly higher improvements. Hypothesis testing indicated no significant differences in knowledge gains based on age, gender, or education level (p > .05), confirming the intervention’s effectiveness across sociodemographic groups. These results highlight the critical role of structured, specific background, and inclusive health education in enhancing community awareness and promoting cholera prevention practices. The study recommends that ublic health authorities and community leaders should implement regular, structured health education programmes on cholera prevention. Continuous education can reinforce knowledge, correct misconceptions, and promote sustained adoption of preventive behaviours.
