Abstract

This study examines the Determinant of Household Energy Demand in Babura Local Government Area, Jigawa State. The study was guide with six research questions and adopted the descriptive survey research design. A sample size of 385 households was drawn from the target population (366200), using the cluster sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a structured checklist and likert scale. The data collection was done after administration and retrieval of the instrument. Out of the 385 administered, 323 were retrieved and 321 were found useful for analysis. The inferential statistics was used to analysis the data with the aid of IBM SPSS version 30.0. Analysis was done using multinomial logistic regression. The results revealed that a one-level increase in the education code was associated with a lower relative risk of choosing agricultural residues rather than firewood (B = -0.898, p = .024). Each additional year of age was associated with approximately 5.8% lower relative risk of choosing LPG rather than firewood (B = -0.060, p=.038). Also a ₦100,000 increase in income was associated with approximately 2.25 times the relative risk of choosing LPG rather than firewood (B = 0.813, p = .009). In conclusion, the study established that firewood was the predominant primary household energy source among the surveyed households, but it does not provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the selected explanatory variables jointly determine energy-source choice in Babura LGA. The study concluded that the government should prioritize affordable access to cleaner energy, sustainable use of existing biomass sources and better local evidence on household energy needs.
