Abstract

This study aims to develop a strategic molecule selection framework to enhance portfolio strategy and business growth within the Philippine branded generic pharmaceutical industry. Its specific objectives are to identify key strategic, financial, and operational factors influencing portfolio decisions, pinpoint common challenges and missed steps, compare selection processes across different generic companies, evaluate benefits and limitations, and formulate implementation mechanisms with performance metrics for long-term adaptability. Employing a quantitative research design, the study surveyed 300 pharmaceutical and healthcare professionals in Makati and Bonifacio Global City using purposive sampling. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed via Kendall’s W agreement analysis, Spearman Rank correlation, and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The results identified "Strategic Market Alignment" and "Operational Resources" as core factors in molecule selection, while revealing a significant correlation between the perceived difficulty of a portfolio step and the frequency of its omission. Furthermore, multinationals prioritized strategic factors more heavily than local manufacturers, and "Process Constraints" such as internal politics and rigid criteria emerged as major decision-making barriers. The study concludes that a systematic, data-driven framework is essential for mitigating risks and achieving a First-to-Market advantage. The proposed framework incorporates a Learning Loop for post-implementation reviews alongside performance metrics like the Selection Efficiency Ratio and Portfolio Velocity. Future research should explore artificial intelligence in market forecasting and expand the geographical scope beyond central business districts.
