God Is More Powerful, But the Prophet is Closer: The Spiritual Security Framework for Understanding Seventh-Day Adventist Migration to Spirit Churches in Rural Zambia

Despite the remarkable growth of Christianity across sub-Saharan Africa, beliefs concerning witchcraft and spiritual causality continue to shape the lived experiences of many Christians. Within rural African communities, illness, unexplained deaths, infertility, poverty, and persistent misfortune are frequently interpreted through cosmological frameworks that recognize the active influence of supernatural forces. This study investigates why some members of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in Kaumba Mission District, Zambia, migrate to Zionist and other Spirit Churches despite affirming belief in God’s supreme authority over evil. Employing a phenomenological qualitative design, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with ten participants who had either left the SDA Church or were considering doing so because of fears associated with witchcraft. Thematic analysis identified five interrelated themes: the persistence of witchcraft as a lived explanatory framework; perceived inadequacies in Adventist pastoral responses; the attraction of visible expressions of spiritual power; the paradox of affirming God’s sovereignty while perceiving prophets as more immediately accessible; and the search for spiritual security rather than theological alternatives. Building on these findings, the article proposes the Spiritual Security Framework (SSF) as a contextual missiological lens for understanding ecclesial migration within African Christianity. The framework argues that resilient Christian discipleship is strengthened when biblical assurance, relational pastoral presence, worshipping community, and contextual discipleship function together to cultivate confidence in God’s protecting presence. The study concludes that the migration of Adventists to Spirit Churches is fundamentally a pastoral and missiological challenge rather than merely a doctrinal one.
