Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted global healthcare systems, with Nigeria’s healthcare sector facing unique challenges and opportunities for reform. This paper examines the effects of the pandemic on Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, focusing on the disruptions caused, the responses implemented, and the long-term implications for health system reforms. Through a comprehensive analysis of healthcare access, resource allocation, and policy adjustments during the pandemic, this study identifies key areas of strain, including inadequate medical supplies, overwhelmed facilities, and disparities in care delivery. Additionally, the paper explores the opportunities for strengthening the healthcare system, such as advancements in telemedicine, increased funding for health initiatives, and reforms in healthcare policy and management. By synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data from various sources, including government reports, healthcare provider assessments, and patient experiences, the study provides actionable recommendations for improving resilience and efficiency in Nigeria’s healthcare system. The findings underscore the need for strategic reforms to address systemic vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic and to build a more robust healthcare framework for future crises.
