Nursing Faculty’s Pedagogical Skills in Relation to Students’ Academic Engagement and Academic Satisfaction

Abstract
Pedagogical skills of faculty members play a crucial role in shaping students' academic engagement and satisfaction, thereby fostering a positive learning environment and enhancing the quality of educational experiences. In nursing education, understanding how these pedagogical competencies influence students' learning experiences is essential for improving teaching effectiveness and preparing competent future healthcare professionals. This study investigated the relationship between nursing faculty's pedagogical skills and students' academic engagement and academic satisfaction. A quantitative, descriptive-correlational research design was employed involving 159 nursing students from a higher education institution in Ozamiz City, Philippines. Respondents were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a validated researcher-made questionnaire that assessed nursing faculty's pedagogical skills, students' academic engagement, and academic satisfaction. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics through the Pearson Product–Moment Correlation Coefficient. Findings revealed that nursing students rated their faculty members' pedagogical skills as very satisfactory, while demonstrating high levels of cognitive and emotional academic engagement and high overall academic satisfaction with their learning experiences. Nursing faculty's pedagogical skills were significantly associated with students' academic engagement and academic satisfaction. Significant relationships were observed between selecting and planning, teaching and learning activities, assessment strategies, and content mastery with students' academic engagement, whereas interaction strategies showed no significant relationship. Furthermore, all pedagogical skill domains demonstrated significant positive relationships with students' academic satisfaction. The study concludes that nursing faculty's pedagogical competence plays a significant role in enhancing students' academic engagement and academic satisfaction, underscoring its importance in promoting effective teaching and meaningful learning experiences. The findings highlight the need for continuous professional development programs that strengthen pedagogical competencies, particularly in instructional planning, teaching strategies, assessment practices, and content mastery, to further improve student engagement, academic satisfaction, and the overall quality of nursing education.
