Improving Proportional Likeness in Beginner Portrait Drawing: A Qualitative Study of the Grid-Based Drawing Technique

Abstract

1) Background: In art education, teaching accurate Portrait Drawing to novices involves cognitive challenges because the human visual system processes facial features holistically, and beginners tend to rely on preconceived symbolic schemas rather than on objective anatomical realities. 2) Methods: A descriptive qualitative approach is used to explore how structural scaffolding influences these active vision biases, employing the Grid-Based Drawing technique as a mediating visual transfer process rather than universal artistic mastery. Data collection was conducted under a dual-phase framework. The first phase involved a comparative visual analysis of the proportional likeness perceived in beginner artefacts. The second phase was an observational record of internal cognitive shifts during the Observational Drawing process. 3) Results: Results indicate it is possible to mathematically extract a reference portrait into localised 2D coordinates, which successfully break the inherent mind-body dualism. This style of drawing especially demands a disciplined, segmented microfocus, enabling beginners to develop highly cohesive Spatial Mapping with dramatically reduced acute learning frustration and cognitive overload. 4) Conclusion: The study concludes that the grid is a highly effective short-term pedagogical scaffold, facilitating immediate contextual success and proportional accuracy, bridging the perceptual gap for beginners as they engage the visual complexities of foundational portraiture.
