Abstract

This systematic review examined the challenges and promising opportunities for enhancing food security among smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study’s methodology involved analysis of peer-reviewed studies utilizing PRISMA guidelines and thematic content analysis across multiple databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and African Journals Online. Findings revealed that smallholder farmers face interconnected challenges including limited access to finance, climate change vulnerability, inadequate infrastructure, weak market linkages, and insufficient extension services. However, significant opportunities were identified through digital agriculture adoption, agroecological practices, participatory research approaches, women’s empowerment initiatives, and innovative financing mechanisms. The study demonstrates that successful interventions typically integrate multiple approaches tailored to local contexts rather than pursuing single-factor solutions. Consequently, the study recommends policy reforms prioritizing smallholder-centric national agricultural strategies, increased investment in climate-resilient farming practices, strengthening farmer organizations, developing context-specific technology solutions, and creating enabling environments for youth engagement in agriculture.
