Abstract
The Malaysian palm oil industry has experienced significant growth and plays a crucial role in the global vegetable oil market. However, the rapid expansion of palm oil production has raised concerns about its environmental and social impacts. In response, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme was introduced to promote sustainable practices and address these concerns. This study explores the impacts and effectiveness of MSPO on sustainable supply chain management in the Malaysian palm oil industry. A qualitative approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with five purposively selected informants from MSPO-certified organizations and smallholdings in Melaka and Johor. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring themes and patterns related to the benefits and challenges of MSPO certification. The findings reveal that the implementation of MSPO has led to improved management systems, operational efficiency, and sustainability practices across the industry. It has addressed critical issues such as forced labor, enhanced worker welfare, and improved environmental stewardship. Smallholders have benefited from more structured approaches to production, resulting in higher-quality output and potentially increased market value. However, challenges remain, particularly for small producers adapting to new standards and the lack of significant economic incentives for certified products. The study concludes that MSPO certification has demonstrated significant effectiveness in promoting sustainable supply chain management within the Malaysian palm oil industry, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and compliance. As the scheme continues to evolve, it is poised to play an increasingly crucial role in shaping the future trajectory of Malaysia's palm oil sector towards greater sustainability and global competitiveness.
