Abstract

Market valuation is important because it reflects how the market assesses a company’s current performance and future prospects. Earnings remain one of the main sources of financial information used in this assessment. However, focusing only on the amount of earnings reported in a particular period may provide an incomplete view of company performance. This conceptual paper examines the relationship between earnings performance and market valuation by separating earnings performance into two dimensions: earnings level and earnings stability. A conceptual literature review approach is used to integrate relevant studies on earnings per share, profitability, earnings persistence, earnings volatility, stock prices, firm value, and price-to-earnings ratios. The review gives priority to recent Scopus-indexed studies while retaining selected earlier studies that provide important conceptual foundations. Based on the literature, the paper develops a focused framework with two propositions. The first proposes that higher earnings levels are positively associated with market valuation. The second proposes that greater earnings stability is positively associated with market valuation. The framework argues that the amount of earnings provides information about current financial strength, while stable earnings provide additional information about the reliability and predictability of future performance. By distinguishing these two dimensions, the paper offers a clearer explanation of how earnings performance may contribute to market valuation. The framework also provides practical value for managers and investors by encouraging them to consider both earnings strength and consistency when evaluating company performance. This distinction may support more balanced financial analysis and valuation decisions. Future empirical research can test the two proposed relationships across different industries and market settings.
