Abstract

This study aimed to analyze published research abstracts on Filipino language teaching in the Philippines from 2022 to 2026. Specifically, it sought to determine the distribution of studies according to year of publication, thematic focus, research approach, research design, participants, research instruments, and identified research gaps. The study employed Qualitative Content Analysis supported by thematic analysis and descriptive data analysis using frequency and percentage. Thirty-five (35) published research abstracts were purposively selected from reputable online databases, institutional repositories, and peer-reviewed journals. A researcher-developed Coding Matrix was utilized to systematically code and classify the essential characteristics of each abstract.
The findings revealed that the highest number of publications appeared in 2025. Instructional strategies emerged as the most dominant thematic focus among the studies. Quantitative research was the most frequently employed research approach, while descriptive research was the most used research design. Students constituted the primary participants in most of the studies, and questionnaires were identified as the most widely used research instrument. Furthermore, the most significant research gap identified was the need to develop and evaluate more effective instructional strategies and educational interventions. Other notable research gaps included technology integration, teachers' professional development, methodological expansion, and curriculum and policy implementation.
The study concludes that research on Filipino language teaching in the Philippines continues to expand, reflecting the growing interest of researchers in improving language instruction. However, the findings also indicate the need for more diverse, comprehensive, and innovative studies to address existing research gaps. The results of this study may serve as a valuable reference for researchers, educators, curriculum developers, school administrators, and policymakers in planning future research and enhancing the quality of Filipino language teaching and learning.
