Abstract
Tension in balancing academic and public service responsibilities is a problem in leadership. I explore the tension student leaders face in balancing academic and public service duties. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, interviewing eight purposively selected student leaders, and analyzing the data through thematic analysis, I found that student leaders are expected to demonstrate active leadership, academic competence, and constant availability while fulfilling academic and public service responsibilities. School heads, local government officials, educators, and families may collaborate to provide support mechanisms that help student leaders balance academic competence, leadership, and public service responsibilities, thereby reducing role conflict and stress. Future studies may use quantitative approaches and prescriptive research to develop intervention programs for student leaders.
