Abstract
This study explored the lived experiences of Public Health Nurses serving in managerial and supervisory roles within Rural Health Units in South Cotabato, Philippines. Using a descriptive phenomenological design, 10 PHN managers were purposively selected and participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Five emergent themes were identified: Becoming a Public Health Nurse Manager, Navigating the Complexities of Public Health Work, Sustaining the Workforce through Support and Systems, Leading with Compassion and Collaboration, and Finding Meaning and Fulfillment in Service. Findings revealed that PHN managers balance clinical and administrative responsibilities while addressing resource constraints through adaptive leadership, collaboration, continuous learning, and personal resilience. Their experiences underscore the importance of organizational support, leadership development, and workforce investment in strengthening public health services. The study concludes that empowering PHN managers through sustained professional development and institutional support is essential for improving leadership effectiveness and delivering responsive, high-quality community healthcare in rural settings.
