Abstract

Roller chain conveyors are fundamental to materials handling and power transmission across modern industrial and manufacturing logistics. However, pin-bushing bearing wear and frictional degradation in chain joints remain primary drivers of unexpected downtime, premature chain elongation, and excessive energy consumption. Over the past six years, tribological research and engineering developments have increasingly focused on replacing inconsistent manual lubrication with cost-effective, automated alternatives. This review synthesizes recent literature and patented technologies on automatic lubrication systems (ALS) applied to industrial conveyor setups. It examines the mechanical and tribological mechanisms of chain joint failure, evaluates commercial and patented ALS solutions across pneumatic, mechanical, digital, and time-relay architectures, and highlights the trade-offs between system complexity and practical accessibility for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Special focus is given to dual-sided, time-relay drop/shot configurations as a low-cost, open-loop strategy for balanced lubricant application.
