Abstract

This study explored the connection between Crime Control and Security Management in Uyo Capital City Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The motivation behind this research centered on the ongoing issues with crimes like burglary, armed robbery, kidnapping, street robbery, and vehicle theft, which persist despite the government's and security agencies' efforts to ensure public safety. A descriptive research design was utilized for this study. The target population included residents of the Uyo Local Government Area, which has an estimated population of 509,916. To gather data, a sample size of 380 respondents was calculated using the Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination table, various sampling techniques, including cluster, purposive, and simple random sampling, were used to select participants. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources and analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC). The results indicated significant positive relationships between the crime-control strategies examined and the management of the identified crimes. Community vigilante groups played a crucial role in controlling burglary through neighborhood surveillance, patrols, information sharing, and timely reporting of suspicious activities. The study focused on monitoring vulnerable areas and found that the null hypotheses were rejected. The calculated correlation coefficient was r = 1.00, which surpassed the critical value of r = 0.707 at the 0.05 significance level. The study recommends for a fostering better collaboration between community vigilante groups and official security agencies, enhancing police patrols and surveillance tech, improving intelligence gathering and information sharing among agencies, and boosting investment in crime-prevention infrastructure and environmental safety.
