Abstract

This article examines the relationship of digital competence (DC), digital leadership (DL), and structural empowerment (SE) drives service agility (SA) among frontline retail employees navigating increasingly automated and volatile work environments. This study contributes a conceptual framework that reconciles individual-level digital skills with organizational-level structural support to explain how workforce adaptability fosters operational resilience in the retail sector. By situating service agility at the intersection of human agency and technological integration, this conceptual analysis addresses a vital gap in understanding how workforce adaptability dictates competitive advantage in evolving retail land. The proposed framework provides a critical lens for exploring how these antecedents mitigate the challenges inherent in the digital era, where traditional retail models are increasingly strained by rapid technological disruption. By delineating these relationships, the study clarifies how decentralized decision-making and digital proficiency facilitate the rapid responsiveness required to align service delivery with shifting consumer preferences. Ultimately, this inquiry underscores the necessity of fostering a digitally empowered frontline to enhance organizational productivity and operational adaptability. This theoretical integration aligns individual micro-agility with organizational dynamic capabilities, emphasizing that the reconfiguration of internal resources is essential for sustaining long-term competitive performance. Thus, the framework positions frontline employees not merely as recipients of digital transformation but as active contributors to sensing customer needs, seizing service opportunities, and adapting retail operations.
