Abstract

Assessment plays a critical role in determining pre-service teachers’ readiness and competence during experiential learning. This study identified competencies that supervising teachers utilized to assess pre-service teachers’ engagement in experiential learning. Based on the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST), the study employed a sequential exploratory mixed-methods research design. In the qualitative phase, six supervising teachers were purposively selected and participated in in-depth interviews; 47 pre-service teachers were included in the quantitative phase. Thematic analysis of the data revealed seven competencies: content mastery and delivery, positive classroom management, inclusive instructional strategy, constructive planning, responsive assessment, professional conduct, and reflective growth. These themes were used to develop three assessment tools for teaching demonstration, lesson planning, and non-classroom attributes. The developed assessment tools exhibited a very high overall content validity index and demonstrated excellent internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from .860 to .971. The results showed that the developed assessment tools were valid and reliable for assessing pre-service teachers' experiential learning. It is recommended that the developed criteria be tested within a higher-level research design, such as exploratory factor analysis.
