Establishment of a Student Savings and Credit Cooperative: A Feasibility Study

This study assessed the feasibility of establishing a Student Savings and Credit Cooperative in a private higher education institution, focusing on market, management and organizational, operational and technical, financial, and socio-economic feasibility. It specifically examined the students’ interest, willingness to participate, financial needs, institutional readiness, operational requirements, and the potential sustainability of the proposed cooperative.
A parallel mixed-methods research design was employed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the proposed undertaking. Quantitative data were collected through total enumeration from 173 third- and fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Business Administration students using a validated questionnaire. Qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with six conversation partners composed of selected students, school administrators, faculty and staff, and cooperative development experts. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency counts, means, and standard deviations, while qualitative responses were examined using Creswell’s thematic analysis. The rigor and trustworthiness of the qualitative findings were ensured through credibility using member checking, transferability through detailed descriptions of the participants and research context, dependability through systematic documentation of the data collection and analysis procedures, and confirmability by grounding the interpretations in the participants’ actual responses and maintaining an audit trail.
The findings revealed a very high level of student interest and demand for the proposed cooperative, indicating strong market feasibility and a substantial potential membership base. Respondents demonstrated a strong willingness to participate in savings and credit services. The qualitative findings further highlighted the potential of the cooperative to address students’ unmet financial needs, promote financial literacy, encourage responsible saving and borrowing practices, and support academic continuity. Financial projections generated positive net interest results, indicating the cooperative’s potential sustainability. Management, organizational, operational, and technical assessments also demonstrated institutional readiness and the availability of essential resources and support systems.
The study concluded that establishing a Student Savings and Credit Cooperative is highly feasible. Its implementation is recommended to strengthen students’ financial well-being, develop responsible financial behavior, and contribute to the institution’s socio-economic and educational development.
