Abstract
Previous research findings have discovered that the relationship between continuous assessment and final assessment performance in many courses is positive. Nevertheless, research on the relationship between continuous assessment and final assessment performance in economics-related courses is scarce, specifically in the Town and Regional Planning program. Thus, the objective of this research was to examine the relationship between continuous and final assessments performance in the Economics of Land Development course. This course was chosen because the overall students’ academic performance was merely satisfactory. This research applied a quantitative approach by using records of students’ marks from the continuous and final assessments. The continuous assessment consisted of a test and the first assignment. While the final assessment was in the form of a final assignment. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis as embedded in the IBM SPSS Statistics (version 26) software. The findings revealed that the test showed a positive correlation with the final assignment. However, its correlation was very weak (r = .115, p = .639 [p > .05]). Besides, the first assignment exhibited a negative correlation with the final assignment. Moreover, its correlation was weak (r = -.357, p = .133 [p > .05]). This research concludes that the continuous assessment exhibits a very weak relationship with final assessment performance. These findings contribute to new knowledge of the relationship between continuous assessment and final assessment performance in the Economics of Land Development course. Practically, this research provides fruitful insight for the relevant parties to improve the performance of students in both continuous and final assessments, specifically in the Economics of Land Development course. Hence, future research should be done to determine the factors contributing to the merely satisfactory performance for all assignments and poor performance for the test in this course.
