Physician-Centered EHR Satisfaction: A Literature-Driven Conceptual Usability Model

Abstract
Despite the widespread adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems aimed at efficiently systemizing healthcare information, the demand continues to pose challenges, with ongoing reports of usability issues. This paper reviews recent literature on EHR usability factors, with a specific focus on research aimed at addressing several vital challenges associated with its usability and on understanding its impacts on physicians’ job satisfaction. The scoping review identifies relevant studies published in English between 2018 and 2026. The model was proposed after reviewing recent literature on factors and usability issues affecting physicians’ efficiency and satisfaction with EHR. The proposed conceptual model requires validation, and it may be used to assess physicians’ satisfaction with the use of EHR to realize benefits. Ongoing studies consistently indicate that usability issues frequently contribute to physicians’ dissatisfaction with EHR systems, impacting their workload and job satisfaction over time.
