Abstract

Women constitute nearly half of India's population and play a crucial role in the nation's economic, social, and political development. In recent decades, expanding educational opportunities and economic modernisation have encouraged greater participation by women in the workforce. Despite these advancements, Indian women continue to face numerous challenges in their workplaces that hinder their professional growth and economic empowerment. Problems such as inadequate workplace facilities, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, unequal pay, male-dominated decision-making structures, financial dependency, work-life imbalance, maternity-related discrimination, and limited leadership opportunities continue to affect women across various sectors. These issues are deeply rooted in patriarchal social norms and institutional practices that restrict women's full participation in economic activities. This study examines the major workplace problems faced by Indian women and analyses their impact on career development and empowerment. The paper also suggests measures to create safer, more inclusive, and gender-sensitive workplaces in India.
