Abstract

This study examines the concept of Insān al-Kāmil in the thought of Ibn ʿArabī as an epistemological framework for understanding human intelligence, with particular reference to al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyyah. While modern theories of intelligence, such as Intelligence Quotient (IQ), Emotional Quotient (EQ), and Spiritual Quotient (SQ), have progressively expanded the scope of human cognition, they remain functionally specialised and lack a unified metaphysical foundation that integrates cognition, emotion, spirituality, and moral discernment. Employing qualitative conceptual content analysis, this study analyses key constructs including ʿaql, qalb, rūḥ, fikr, dhikr, taqwā, and al-furqān, and examines their interrelations within a tawḥīdic epistemological framework. The findings reveal that intelligence, in Ibn ʿArabī’s perspective, is not merely a cognitive capacity but a holistic form of consciousness that integrates intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and ethical dimensions. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the epistemic model of Insān al-Kāmil positions intelligence as an existential process oriented toward maʿrifah, rather than a merely instrumental capacity. A dialogical engagement with contemporary neuroscience suggests convergence at the level of integrative cognition, while maintaining clear epistemological and teleological distinctions between biological explanation and metaphysical meaning. In response to the practical limitations of purely theoretical models, the study further proposes preliminary educational implications through the integration of fikr, dhikr, ethical reflection, and the role of the teacher as murabbi. The study concludes that Insān al-Kāmil offers a comprehensive tawḥīdic paradigm for reconstructing human intelligence and addressing the contemporary crisis of meaning.
