Strength in Leadership: Exploring the Role of Women in Enhancing Organizational Resilience at Benguet General Hospital

Organizational resilience in healthcare facilities is closely linked to leadership, particularly in contexts where women hold a majority of department and section head positions. This study examined the contributions, challenges, leadership styles, and strategies of women leaders at Benguet General Hospital (BeGH), a provincial local government unit (LGU) owned and operated economic enterprise. Using a quantitative-descriptive design, data were collected from 32 women leaders through a validated researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings indicate that women leaders contribute strongly to hospital resilience, with high mean ratings in staff empowerment and development (3.45), continuous improvement or learning (3.45), communication and information flow (3.34), crisis and risk management (2.99), and decision-making (2.93). Leadership styles were consistently practiced, with high ratings across transformational (3.39), servant (3.45), adaptive (3.48), authentic (3.49), inclusive or shared (3.50), and cross-cutting leadership behaviors (3.53). Challenges were generally low to moderate (overall mean = 2.16), with multiple role expectations, limited resources, and work-life balance as the most commonly encountered concerns. Strategies to strengthen resilience were positively rated (overall mean = 2.91), emphasizing interdepartmental collaboration, women’s representation in decision-making bodies, and leadership development initiatives. While decision-making obtained relatively lower scores, this study did not examine governance structures; nonetheless, BeGH’s LGU economic enterprise context provides relevant institutional background that may warrant further investigation. Overall, women leaders play a significant role in strengthening organizational resilience through relational, adaptive, and inclusive leadership practices, supporting sustainable healthcare delivery in resource-constrained public hospital settings.
