Abstract

Research on green practices is crucial in the education system as it promotes environmental preservation and sustainability. However, community awareness and involvement in implementing green practices remain insufficiently discussed in depth. Thus, this study focuses on a systematic literature review (SLR) of past research related to student awareness and involvement in green practices in Malaysia. In addition, the study identifies research design trends, methodologies, and instruments used, while analyzing main findings and identifying research gaps to propose recommendations for future research. A descriptive document analysis design was employed based on a systematic literature review using the Google Scholar search engine. Research articles meeting the selection criteria were selected within a five-year period from 2021 to 2025. The article selection process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flow chart process. Subsequently, the analysis encompassed aspects of research background, problem statements, methodology, and past study findings. The results identified nine articles that met the selection criteria. However, these articles focused on key keywords such as green practices, awareness, and involvement. Findings indicate that students' level of knowledge regarding green practices is high, and students are aware of the importance of sustainability. Nevertheless, a gap exists between students' knowledge and practice, where the knowledge they possess does not necessarily translate into green practice actions. Furthermore, the need for contextual interventions such as composting practices, hands-on activities, and green campus programs showed positive impacts on student involvement. Policy support elements and physical environment infrastructure were also found to play vital roles in fostering a sustainable culture. Overall, these findings demonstrate that students in Malaysia possess high awareness of environmental issues, although their involvement in green practices remains non-comprehensive. As quantitative research approaches dominate current studies, it is recommended that longitudinal, qualitative, and community action approaches be expanded to identify new issues related to dynamic green practices in Malaysia.
