Abstract

This study examined how ethics enhances academic excellence in higher education institutions in Tanzania, focusing on Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Mzumbe University Mbeya College. Values like academic integrity, honesty, accountability, transparency, professionalism, fairness, and respect are not just ideals—they shape how people teach, learn, do research, and run things day to day. Still, even with ethical codes and set rules in place, these universities face big problems: cheating on exams, plagiarism, corruption, sexual harassment, favoritism, all sorts of unethical behavior that erode quality and damage the institution’s name. The research examined how ethical practices feed into academic excellence, pinpointed the major ethical issues universities struggle with, and explored ways to raise the bar on ethics. To get real insight, the study used a qualitative case study approach. The researcher gathered information through interviews, group discussions, document reviews, and just observing how things play out day to day, involving faculty, staff, and students. Thematic analysis helped make sense of what everyone said. So, what did they find? When people stick to ethical principles, academic performance gets a real bump—research quality goes up, governance improves, stakeholders trust the institution more, and the school’s reputation grows stronger. The big takeaway: building a strong culture of ethics and making sure people follow the rules are vital for lasting academic success. The study urges universities, policymakers, and regulators to double down on ethics education, push for more accountability, and really put ethical policies into action to raise the standard of higher education in Tanzania.
