Abstract

This study investigated perceived impact of counselling on the academic adjustment of undergraduate students in Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi. Two research questions guided the study, and two hypotheses were tested. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population consist 25,843 students across eight faculties, from which a sample of 380 respondents was selected using a multistage sampling procedure. Data were collected using a researcher-developed instrument titled Counselling and Academic Adjustment Questionnaire (CAAQ), structured on a four-point Likert scale. A pilot study was conducted to establish reliability, and the instrument yielded a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.82, indicating high internal consistency. Data were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions, with 2.50 as the criterion mean. Hypotheses were tested using the Chi-square (χ²) goodness-of-fit test at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that counselling has a significant perceived impact on undergraduate students’ academic motivation, and academic self-efficacy. The study concluded that functional counselling services play a critical role in enhancing students’ academic adjustment and overall academic functioning. It was therefore recommended that the university should strengthen counselling programmes through targeted interventions focused on motivation and self-efficacy to support students’ academic success.
