Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of EssayNavigator in supporting ESL students’ essay writing development. Academic writing remains a major challenge for many ESL learners, particularly in organizing ideas, developing coherent essay structures, and producing effective introductions, topic sentences, and conclusions. Guided by Cognitive Load Theory, Scaffolding Theory, Dual Coding Theory, Social Constructivism, and Self-Regulation Theory, this study explores how Essay Navigator assists students through step-by-step instruction, colour coding, peer comments, and evaluative review. A quantitative research design was employed, involving 61 respondents who completed a Likert-scale survey on academic writing difficulties, essay structure learning, and peer review activities. The findings revealed that students experienced moderate difficulties in organization and structure, especially in arranging ideas logically and connecting paragraphs smoothly. However, students responded positively to the features integrated in Essay Navigator. Step-by-step instructions were perceived as easy to follow and helpful in understanding the essay writing process, while colour coding improved students’ understanding of essay structure and organization of ideas. In addition, peer comments and evaluative review were found to help students identify weaknesses, understand mistakes, and improve essay quality. The study concludes that Essay Navigator is an effective tool in supporting ESL students’ academic writing development by integrating structured guidance, visual support, collaborative learning, and reflective evaluation. The findings provide useful pedagogical implications for enhancing academic writing instruction in ESL contexts.
