Abstract
Knowledge constitutes the foundation of human cognition, learning, innovation, and societal development, influencing how individuals interpret reality, construct meaning, and make decisions within increasingly complex social, cultural, technological, and political environments. The question of how human beings acquire, justify, validate, and apply knowledge has occupied philosophers, educators, scientists, and social theorists for more than two millennia, resulting in the development of diverse epistemological traditions that emphasise reason, empirical observation, intuition, memory, testimony, authority, faith, and scientific inquiry as legitimate ways of knowing. Although classical theories frequently privileged a single epistemological perspective, contemporary scholarship increasingly recognises that knowledge is multidimensional, socially situated, culturally mediated, and technologically influenced. Guided by the theory of epistemological pluralism, this theoretical and integrative review synthesises classical philosophical scholarship with contemporary developments in cognitive science, educational research, digital epistemology, artificial intelligence, information science, feminist epistemology, indigenous knowledge systems, and postmodern theory to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding human knowledge acquisition. The current study critically evaluates the strengths, limitations, complementarities, and tensions among competing epistemological perspectives while examining how emerging technologies, algorithmic decision-making, digital literacy, misinformation, big data, and artificial intelligence have transformed contemporary knowledge production and validation. A revised conceptual framework is proposed to illustrate the dynamic interactions among diverse ways of knowing, cognitive processes, social contexts, technological systems, and knowledge outcomes. The review further identifies implications for education, research, organisational leadership, public policy, and professional practice while outlining avenues for future empirical validation of the proposed framework. The present findings suggest that effective knowledge acquisition depends upon integrating multiple epistemological traditions rather than privileging any single source of knowledge, thereby promoting critical thinking, informed decision-making, innovation, ethical reasoning, and lifelong learning in an increasingly interconnected and digital world.
