Student's Literacy Competence: The Use of Guided Reading Model and the Sociocultural Perspective

Abstract
This study discusses literacy competence (LC) in elementary schools. Although LC is important, it does not meet adequate capability standards. This study aims to analyze LC through the Guided Reading (GR) Model and sociocultural factors. The research method uses Mixed Methods with an explanatory sequential design. The stages carried out are quasi-experimental, followed by descriptive analysis. This research was conducted on grade IV students in six elementary schools implementing the School Literacy Movement (GLS). The number of students is 200, consisting of 94 male students and 106 female students. The research instrument consists of tests, observations, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with students, parents, and teachers. Data analysis using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric test. LC categories include literacy level, competence, and comprehension level. Research results: (1) the GR model is able to increase LC from low to medium levels; (2) the level of literacy comprehension increases from the literal factual category to the interpretive category; and (3) socio-cultural factors that affect LC, among others: book reading facilities, parental guidance, and the use of technology, which negatively affect LC. However, the findings do not support the assumption that technology use, by itself, increases LC; instead, its effect appears to depend on the presence of parental guidance and supervision. Further research, particularly using longitudinal or experimental designs, is needed to examine the impact of technology and mentoring patterns on LC development among elementary school students.
