Abstract
Despite being formally educated, many hospitality graduates struggle to transition into real-world front office positions. This employability gap is mostly due to a lack of an education framework that efficiently combines technical competencies with behavioral skills. This research focuses on five core components: knowledge, skills, self-concept, personality traits, motivation aligned with McClelland’s Competency Model. A quantitative survey was conducted with 191 hospitality students from UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang, and data was processed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression with SPSS. Findings revealed that all five components had positive relationships with student competencies, but only knowledge and skills were significant predictors of readiness for front office work. These findings strengthen the applicability of McClelland’s model and highlight the need for more comprehensive practical training in the form of structured internships and industry partnerships. Limitations to this study were the singular focus on one institution and a cross-sectional design. More diverse sampling and longitudinal designs are encouraged for future research.
