Abstract

This study examines the design and development of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) prototype, specifically as a hands-on teaching aid to enhance students' understanding of the wind turbine concept. Due to the rapid expansion of wind energy applications, students are required to possess a good understanding of both theory and applications, as well as effective educational tools for practical purposes. This paper describes the elements of educational methods for understanding the concept of wind turbines, such as process design, fabrication, and performance studies of a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). The wind energy was captured by moving vehicles on the street. Two types of VAWT, Banki and Savonius, were designed and fabricated using SOLIDWORKS software and a 3D machine printer, respectively. To ensure a controlled learning environment while maintaining safety protocols, the range of possible wind speeds generated by moving vehicles on the street was simulated using a table fan to analyze the performance of the wind turbine due to the safety precautions. As a result, VAWT with Banki rotor has better efficiency than the Savonius rotor. The prototype serves as a bridge between educational application and theoretical knowledge.
