Research Proficiency of Pre-Service Teachers: Basis for Proposed Enhancement Program

The study was designed to determine the level of research proficiency among the pre-service teachers of Ifugao State University, Potia, Alfonso Lista, Ifugao which served as basis in crafting research enhancement program. Descriptive method was employed to describe, explain, and interpret the focus of the study. The second- and third-year Bachelor in Secondary Education students majoring in English were selected as respondents. Survey questionnaire was used to gather data. Descriptive statistics was utilized to analyze the data. Findings revealed that all the respondents believed that they have general understanding of key principles but have limited or not enough applied experiences, hence their level of proficiency is still developing in the following areas: formulation and development of research, reviewing and citing of related literature and studies, designing appropriate method, identifying instrument and statistical tools, analysis and interpretation of data and drawing conclusions and formulation of recommendations. Further, factors such as time, money, lack of participation, underdeveloped writing skills, insufficient knowledge in research and the pandemic adversely affect their proficiency in doing research. Hence, the respondents must be provided with ample seminar and workshop, enough involvement and experience in doing research, avail funding for research, mentoring and coaching, and access to research-related learning materials to equip and strengthen the respondents in conducting research.
