Abstract

Quran memorisation is an important component of Islamic education that requires accurate and fluent memorisation. This study aimed to identify Quran memorisation achievement among students enrolled in a Tilawah and Memorisation course at a Malaysian public university based on tasmi‘ assessment. The study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design and involved all 39 students enrolled in the course during the respective semester. Data were obtained from existing academic assessment records for Assignment 2, which was conducted individually through tasmi‘. The assessment involved four surahs, namely Surah Yasin, Surah al-Sajadah, Surah al-Mulk, and Surah al-Waqiah, and was based on two main aspects: memorisation fluency and tajwid accuracy, with a maximum score of 20 marks. The findings showed a mean score of 7.49, a median of 7.00, and a standard deviation of 5.32, with scores ranging from 1 to 20 marks. These findings indicate considerable variation in memorisation achievement among the students studied. This study provides an empirical description of Quran memorisation achievement based on direct performance assessment within the context of a course at a public university. Further research involving multiple institutions and examining factors that may be associated with variations in memorisation achievement is recommended.
