Abstract

DNA fingerprinting of crop varieties is the most reliable method for varietal identification and seed trace in seed industry. It provides authentic proof for breeders to prevent unauthorized use of varieties by private entities and avoid infringement claims. It can be used as a molecular tool for genetic verification in seed certification. The technique also plays a key role in maintaining genetic integrity by preventing contamination and ensuring consistency in hybrid and open-pollinated varieties. In this way, DNA fingerprinting assures the true-to-type seed development, which is vital for maintenance of genetic purity in commercial cultivation and breeding programs. DNA fingerprint profiles of the varieties and hybrids acts as concrete evidence of genetic originality for legal protection through intellectual property rights and breeders rights. In addition, it aids in the management of germplasm collections by enabling the formation of core and mini-core sets and identifying duplicates. Hence, development of Uniqueness Index calculator for molecular profiles helps to quantify genetic distinctiveness of varieties quickly, suggesting the minimum number of markers for marker profile development in comparison of genetic profiles across varieties and to reduce unambiguous identification of crop varieties.
