Abstract
The observance of a state 'foundation day' is rarely a neutral civic exercise; it is an act of selective remembering that inevitably privileges one historical narrative over competing ones. This article examines the ongoing controversy surrounding the observance of 'West Bengal Day', which began in 2023 when the Governor of West Bengal unilaterally designated 20 June — the date on which the Bengal Legislative Assembly voted for the partition of the province in 1947 — as the state's foundation day, a move contested by the then Trinamool Congress government, which instead instituted Poila Boishakh (the Bengali New Year) as 'Bangla Dibas'. Following the 2026 Assembly election and the change of government, the newly installed administration has proposed reverting to 20 June. Drawing on historiography of the partition of Bengal, theories of collective memory and commemorative politics, and recent journalistic and archival sources, the article situates this dispute within the longer history of the 1946–47 transfer of power, the communal violence that attended it, and the competing claims of Bengali linguistic-cultural nationalism versus religiously inflected historical memory. It argues that the deeper significance of observing West Bengal Day lies not in the date chosen but in the civic self-reflection the occasion can occasion — on unemployment, migration, education, healthcare and border governance — and in reaffirming an inclusive Bengali identity irrespective of religion or region of origin.
