Abstract
Local cultural identity has become an important source of inspiration for developing contemporary designs that support cultural preservation and representation. Traditional Malay batik represents Malay cultural identity and it is one of Malaysia's important cultural heritage traditions, which also contributes to the representation of Malaysian cultural identity. Typography is not only a medium of communication but also an important visual communication medium for representing cultural identity. However, the application of traditional Malay batik motifs in typography design remains limited. This concept paper explores the application of traditional Malay batik motifs in typography design as a visual communication medium for representing Malay cultural identity. Traditional Malay batik, which is well known in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Kelantan and Terengganu, is recognized for its floral, fauna, and geometric motifs. This study focuses on the application of floral motifs in typography design. Through a review of the literature on cultural identity, traditional Malay batik, and typography, this paper discusses the potential application of traditional Malay batik motifs in contemporary typography design. The proposed typography design aims to strengthen the representation of Malay cultural identity while supporting cultural heritage preservation. The application of traditional Malay batik motifs in typography design also provides opportunities for cultural branding, tourism promotion, and creative visual communication.
