Abstract

Effective professional correspondence is increasingly recognised as an essential competency for graduates entering today’s dynamic workplace. As the nature of workplace settings has become more complex and challenging, a persistent concern among employers is the insufficient development of adaptable and audience-aware communication skills among graduates. Despite its importance, the teaching of professional correspondence in higher education often focuses on static templates and decontextualised grammar exercises, lacking emphasis on authentic workplace communication experience. To bridge this gap, this conceptual paper proposes the applicability of Kolb’s Experiential Learning theory to the micro-skills required in professional settings. This framework shifts the instructional focus from product-oriented formatting to process-oriented, authentic learning. It synthesises practical implementation approaches, including workplace simulations, role-play settings, and real-world client responses, where students are able to encounter the genuine consequences of their active communication tasks. By positioning students in realistic communication settings integrated with experiential learning cycles, the traditional classroom can be transformed into an authentic communicative environment. Ultimately, this framework allows students to successfully develop communication confidence and employability readiness. The implications for curriculum design and future research are also highlighted.
