An Analysis of Interpersonal Communication for the Film Pride and Prejudice

This study investigates interpersonal communication in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice from a sociolinguistic perspective. It focuses on communication issues arising from inadequate interpersonal interactions particularly in relation to gender and socioeconomic class, while examining how these factors, along with speakers’ message expression, influence communication and contribute to misunderstanding between characters. Guided by Uncertainty Reduction Theory (Berger & Calabrese, 1975) and Social Penetration Theory (Altman & Tailor, 1973), the study explores uncertainty management and self-disclosure in interpersonal relationships. While previous research has mainly examined non-verbal communication in the film, limited attention has been given to verbal interaction and interpersonal communication behaviours such as self-disclosure. A qualitative approach was employed using purposive sampling, and the sample dialogues were transcribed and analysed. Findings reveal that differences in gender and socioeconomic class, together with varying levels of self-disclosure, shape interpersonal interactions and often lead to miscommunication and conflict. This study highlights the importance of sociolinguistic factors in understanding interpersonal communication in film discourse.
