Abstract

The study of self-efficacy and self-regulation has been a frequent trend in the language learning field as of recently. However, when discussing these topics, it is undeniable that the consistency of interest and perseverance would also come into play for an effective learning experience. This study explores the relationships and effects of Consistency of Interest and Perseverance on Self-Efficacy and Self-Regulation among foreign language learners. A survey consists of four parts; Part 1 - Demographic Profile, Part 2 - Grit (12 items). Part 3 - Motivational Beliefs (22 items) and Part 4 - Self-Regulated Learning Strategies (22 items), were used to collect data from 113 foreign language learners in a public university in Malaysia. The data, then., were analysed quantitatively using SmartPLS. The finding shows that perseverance has a positive relationship and effect with self-regulation and self-efficacy. While, consistency of interest does not. This indicates that perseverance is the main factor in learners’ self-confidence and self-learning, providing educational and motivational implication in foreign language learning.
